The incumbent reports to the Engineering Manager or Engineering Supervisor. Receives input from Product Managers as well as individuals organizationally above the incumbent.
Independently plans, schedules, and leads detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope. Researches competitive products to assure new products maintain a competitive edge. Contributes to the establishment of new product definition and design goals by evaluating competitive product and discovery of customer needs.
The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgement. Independently works on a wide range of complex problems that require new approaches through adaptations and modifications of standard engineering principles, theories, techniques, and procedures. Problems may include conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of standard materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Provides solutions that are imaginative, thorough and practical.
Receives technical guidance on complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects. Participates in determining project objectives. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgement and to determine if overall results and objectives have been achieved.
Work requires knowledge of how to devise new approaches to problems encountered through adaptations and modifications of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
Directs a few engineers, designers, and technicians on technical issues on an assigned project. Works with development groups and technical support groups when directing project teams. Communicates with other members of the department in a mutual effort to exchange ideas and suggestions and to use experience and training. Emphasis on projects often change as deadlines and priorities are shifted.
A challenge of this position is to create design ideas that conform to A-dec standards for aesthetics, quality simplicity of production, and simplicity of service.
Major functions of the position include:
Creativity: Original ideas and freedom to develop new and varied solutions to design problems are limited by conformance to A-dec standards for aesthetics and quality, which facilitate production and service in the simplest manner possible, yet perform at or above the specified standards.
Model Making: The incumbent makes layout sketches, and works from these to either make parts or have them fabricated in the Model Shop so a working model can be fabricated to validate the design.
Testing: The incumbent may perform testing of new or competitor products to determine performance within the project parameters. This will generally involve in-house reliability testing as well as field-testing. Collected data is analyzed, summarized and added to the project folder, along with other supporting data.
Trouble Shooting: The incumbent researches product or component failures to determine suitable solutions to production or field failures.
Design Review: The incumbent establishes and coordinates a design review with Product Development and Manufacturing. This is to assure that the final prototype meets product parameters and manufacturability requirements.
Quality: The incumbent assures accuracy of Engineering documents and that designs meet form, fit and function in accordance with A-dec's quality criteria.
Manufacturability/Cost of Parts: The incumbent is responsible for the manufacturability and cost of all parts. This will include using standard materials, use of liberal tolerances, keeping the design simple, ensuring compatibility with intended manufacturing process and frequent contact with Manufacturing during the design phase of a project.
Engineering Release: The incumbent is responsible for the release of assigned projects. This can include Engineering Control Authorizations (ECA’s), Product Development Releases (PDR’s), and Product Change Authorizations (PCA’s).
Documentation: Ensures appropriate documentation is complete and correct. Records ideas in the form of conceptual drawings, layouts, sketches and dimensional drawings. Uses computerized modeling tools for visualization and model making. Works from layouts or sketches and has parts fabricated or may make parts as required. Documents development work including specifications for manufacturing and scientific test results.
Keeping current with technology: Participates in professional and industry standards setting organizations, and other networks to remain current with technological innovations.
An Engineering Supervisor or Manager assigns Work in the form of general parameters, priorities and deadlines. The incumbent communicates with other members of the department in mutual efforts to exchange ideas and suggestions, and to utilize the experience and training of each. The incumbent is consulted by other engineers in efforts to solve design and production related problems.
The incumbent must not pose a risk to self or others
