  • Overview

*This role can be a Senior or Staff level Design Engineer.

    • The incumbent reports to an Engineering Supervisor. Receives input from Product Managers as well as individuals organizationally above the incumbent.
    • Responsible for a portion of a total engineering project. Assists in preparation and participation in design reviews and responsible for organizing data and preparing appropriate documentation for assigned projects. Assignments have specific objectives requiring investigation of a limited number of variables. Applies standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques to provide solutions to a variety of problems.
    • The incumbent exercises independent judgement, within the limits of standard engineering techniques and department procedures. Typical project assignments include independent research and development tasks. Work requires the knowledge of conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structure and equipment with few complex features.
    • Most work is examined at a higher level. Actual supervision received may be minimal or moderate depending upon project complexity. Closer supervision is given on new aspects of assignments. Directs the work of drafters, technicians, and others who assist in small projects.
    • A challenge of this position is to create design ideas that meet the requirements for each project. Emphasis on projects often changes as deadlines and priorities are shifted.
    • Major functions of the position include:
    • Creativity: Original ideas and freedom to develop new and varied solutions to design problems are limited by conformance to A-dec standards for aesthetics and quality, which facilitate production and service in the simplest manner possible, yet perform at or above the specified standards.
    • Model Making: The incumbent makes layout sketches, and works from these to either make parts or have them fabricated in the Model Shop so a working model can be fabricated to validate the design.
    • Testing: The incumbent may perform testing of new or competitor products to determine performance within the project parameters. This will generally involve in-house reliability testing as well as field-testing. Collected data is analyzed, summarized and added to the project folder, along with other supporting data.
    • Troubleshooting: The incumbent researches product or component failures to determine suitable solutions to production or field failures.
    • Design Review: The incumbent establishes and coordinates a design review with Product Development and Manufacturing. This is to assure that the final prototype meets product parameters and manufacturability requirements.
    • Quality: The incumbent assures accuracy of Engineering documents and that designs meet form, fit and function in accordance with A-dec's quality criteria.
    • Manufacturability/Cost of Parts: The incumbent is responsible for the manufacturability and cost of all parts. This will include using standard materials, use of liberal tolerances, keeping the design simple, ensuring compatibility with intended manufacturing process and frequent contact with Manufacturing during the design phase of a project.
    • Engineering Release: The incumbent is responsible for the release of assigned projects. This can include Engineering Control Authorizations (ECA’s), Product Development Releases (PDR’s), and Product Change Authorizations (PCA’s).
    • Documentation: Ensures appropriate documentation is complete and correct. Records ideas in the form of conceptual drawings, layouts, sketches and dimensional drawings. Uses computerized modeling tools for visualization and model making. Works from layouts or sketches and has parts fabricated or may make parts as required. Documents development work including specifications for manufacturing and scientific test results.
    • Keeping current with technology: Maintains membership in engineering professional organizations and establishes professional contacts outside the company to remain current.
    • Work is assigned by an Engineering Supervisor in the form of a project schedule complete with established parameters, priorities and deadlines. The incumbent communicates with other members of the department in mutual efforts to exchange ideas and suggestions, and to utilize the experience and training of each. Other engineers consult the incumbent in efforts to solve design and production related problems.
    • The incumbent must not pose a risk to self or others.

    • Provide for the accomplishment of team objectives through timely completion of assigned objectives.
    • Provide for the value of engineering solutions for products through creative design and by applying up-to-date design solutions, techniques, approaches, methods, and technology.
    • Assure the value of engineering solutions by creating sketches, computer models, mockups, and prototypes; facilitating the evaluation of it by management, technical groups, manufacturing, marketing, and the customer; and conducting design analysis and testing.
    • Assure proper documentation and data files by creating and maintaining up-to-date project records.
    • Assure efficient and effective design activity by directing the work of assigned drafters, designers, technicians and others; and by working with development and technical support groups on projects.
    • Contribute to the accomplishment of team objectives through effective communication and teamwork; and by providing technical assistance as needed.
    • Contribute to the value of product designs by studying competitive product and customer’s practices, and by identifying customer needs.
    • Contribute to the advancement of product designs and awareness of recent innovations by continuing education, reading, participating in engineering organization(s), and by developing and maintaining a professional network outside the company.
    • Contributes to an environment of self-sustaining, continuous improvement consistent with corporate objectives by participating in activities designed to improve throughput times and eliminate waste in a manner that is measurable and provides value to the product and/or service that is delivered.

    • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively in oral, written, and illustration form.
    • Demonstrates basic project management skills and the ability to manage time and resources effectively.
    • Demonstrates ability to work independently with moderate supervision as well as in a team environment.
    • Demonstrates ability to direct the work of CAD operators and technicians.
    • Demonstrates ability to provide engineering solutions to a variety of problems. Skilled to apply and full use standard engineering principles, concepts, and techniques.
    • Successful candidates typically possess over 2 years of relevant professional engineering experience, of increasing complexity, in the application of engineering theory and practice.
    • Technical competence and theoretical knowledge equivalent to a standard curriculum of an accredited BS degree in Engineering with over 2 years’ experience; Masters in Engineering; or equivalent experience.
