  • Overview

    The Materials Engineering Supervisor is a working supervisor position in which the incumbent’s time is divided between supervising a small team and performing materials engineering activities. The Materials Engineering Supervisor manages, directs, coaches, supports and develops laboratory team members, including technicians and/or test engineers. This position focuses on the management and execution of materials engineering team projects and schedules applicable to product development, sustaining engineering and manufacturing support. The Materials Engineering Supervisor also plans, oversees and executes materials engineering projects of his/her own, involving the evaluation, testing, selection, troubleshooting and standardization of materials and associated manufacturing processes.

    The position requires working in both independent and team environments to conduct investigative activities and develop, document and communicate recommendations for materials and processes that meet project and regulatory requirements. The Materials Engineer/Supervisor also provides technical support to engineering and other departments on materials topics. Assignments tend to focus more typically on plastics used in injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, etc., but at times also relate to metallurgy, coatings, finishes, adhesives, lubricants and other materials.

    Responsibilities

    • Successfully execute technical strategy as directed. Ensure department goals are efficiently and effectively met from project initiation through product launch; continue support through product changes through lifecycle based on business need.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain processes and procedures for engineering and assure technical regulatory compliance. Remains current with new technology and engineering processes to allow continuous improvement throughout the operation.
    • Oversee and support departmental budgets, projects, research, expenses, and capital AFE submittals, reviews, approvals. Participates in analyzing technology, resource needs and market demand to plan and assess project feasibility.
    • Accomplishes staff results by hiring, communicating job expectations, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results to ensure department goals are met, and promoting employee personal growth and development. Responsible for direct reports and accomplishing work through outside resources (i.e., consultants, contractors)
    • Independently researches and applies knowledge of materials science principles and materials processing technology to develop solutions to a wide range of complex materials and materials processing assignments related to new product development, sustaining engineering, manufacturing support and quality issue resolution, frequently requiring new approaches based on adaptations and modifications of standard materials science and engineering principles, practices and technology.
    • Defines materials requirements and develops materials standards with input from other stakeholders and based on research of A-dec products, competitive products, customer practices, regulatory requirements, related industries and customer needs.
    • Develops and executes test plans to characterize materials performance properties and process capabilities. Assures in-house and external materials testing and documentation of test methods and results are in accordance with A-dec and industry standards. Collaborates with and frequently leads others on materials testing and production trials.
    • Represents the department on important materials engineering and processing questions. Provides materials and processing consulting and technical assistance to A-dec staff, supplier partners and customers.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s in engineering or equivalent combination of education and work experience, with a minimum of 5 years relevant product development experience.
    • Generally possess over 5 years of relevant professional or technical engineering experience, of increasing responsibility and difficulty of assignments.
    • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively in oral, written, and graphical form.
    • Demonstrates ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a multidisciplinary team environment.
    • Demonstrates ability to supervise engineering and technical personnel.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Medical device industry / dental or medical device field experience
